Encircling large parts of the cities of Cairo and Giza, the Cairo Ring Road is the most important freeway of the Greater Cairo metropolitan area in Egypt and it is where roughly two-thirds of the 22 million residents in greater Cairo reside.
Initially, in addition to reducing the traffic inside Cairo, it’s main purpose was to hinder the urbanization of surrounding arable lands via the creation of a barrier that would surround greater Cairo.
That plan eventually turned out to be unsuccessful and eventually led to tripling the rate of urbanization in the surrounding arable areas.
Oddly enough, despite more pressing issues that plagued the ring road such as lack of adequate public transportation, bad design and the absence of proper maintenance, the government was more concerned with the aesthetic look of the urban developments surrounding the ring road, the “Ashwaiyat” as they were known by their rough, unfinished red brick and mortar look.
In January of 2019, the Egyptian president Sisi, issued a presidential decree that all the “Ashwaiyat” be painted in a uniform manner.
This series of posters and postcards is a visual documentation of the current state of these buildings post the Sisi decree.
